With so many facial treatments available, it can be challenging to keep track of the latest and greatest on the market. And which treatments will work for your particular skin issues and individual skin type. If you’re suffering from hyperpigmentation and melasma, you probably already know that it is difficult to treat these uneven and bothersome facial blemishes.
Originating in Spain, Cosmelan® is a multi-ingredient chemical treatment that aims to reduce hyperpigmentation and facial discoloration. Skin hyperpigmentation is caused by abnormal production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, and is a consequence of uncontrolled, localized overproduction of melanin by the melanocytes, causing irregular skin coloration and dark spots. Cosmelan® gets down to the cellular level to block the tyrosinase enzyme that is responsible for causing pigmentation, effectively inhibiting melanin production.
This treatment differs from others by correcting the existing problem and preventing it from occurring in the long term. An added bonus is you see results quickly – faster than any hyperpigmentation solution in the market. And because it doesn’t use lasers, it’s also the perfect choice for people with melasma who can’t undergo treatments that involve heat.
Cosmelan is definitely not your typical chemical peel. Most sit on your skin for 8-12 minutes, yielding an intense burning sensation, often inducing heat. Cosmelan, sits on your skin for 8-12 hours without any heat or burning reactions. Cosmelan is a thick mask consisting of several powerful pigment fighting natural ingredients including azelaic acid, kojic acid, phytic acid, ascorbic acid, and retinoic acid; making this peel ideal for combatting melasma on a deeper level.
The treatment begins in my office where I apply the Cosmelan mask to your skin. The mask will feel cool and tingly, and occasionally a bit itchy if it dries out. Although the mask will cover your entire face, only the areas that are blotchy or discoloured will be affected. The mask is removed with a gentle cleansing at home 8-12 hours after application. Once the mask is removed the skin can feel warm, occasionally feel ‘sunburnt’, and most clients will experience some swelling, then peeling for around 3-5 days.
You will receive clear after care instructions and skincare products including Cosmelan 2 to use for the 4-6 weeks post peel. Results will be visible within 7-10 days, but will be best after 30 days. There will be improvement of hyperpigmentation and the disappearance of more superficial pigmentation, as well as improvement in skin quality, with unification of skin tone.
For results to last, we recommend adhering to the home post treatment plan for at least 4 months, which may be extended up to 9 months depending on the progression of each individual case. Cosmelan 2 can be used indefinitely with longer intervals between applications for maintenance of results.
I have been seeing dramatic results, not only in my patients, but also in my own skin. I love my results from treatment I had earlier this year, I’m still maintaining my skin now. The photo shows my skin in January 2020, immediately prior to treatment; February 2020, 4 weeks post treatment; September 2020, 8 months post treatment.
