Preventing Facial Aging…Is it Really Possible?
While aging is a fact of life, looking your age doesn’t have to be. There is now increased awareness world-wide about the value of the non-surgical, evidence-based treatments at our disposal. The demand for procedures, such as injectables, energy-based devices and skin peels, have sky-rocketed and continue to be used in the rejuvenation and beautification of the skin. Anti-aging strategies revolve around both primary prevention and early intervention.
While we are not able to prevent aging, we are able to slow it down with preventative treatments. Although there are several treatments on the market that promise various results, my favourites are still muscle relaxing injections and fillers.
Muscle relaxing injections like Botox will improve static lines (lines at rest) by relaxing the muscles that cause these lines to form. I see more and more younger people seeking treatment to prevent these lines from forming in the first place. An interesting study that compared identical twins found that the long-term benefits are more than minimizing the appearance of wrinkles.
This image shows 38 year old identical twins where only one of the twins received regular Botox treatment for 13 years and the other twin only received treatments occasionally. Notice the differences in their appearance, particularly in the upper eyelid region.
Fillers can provide structural support to prevent sagging and volume loss, as well as increase skin hydration. Small amounts of carefully placed filler can provide lateral support to slow down the progression of jowls, naso-labial folds and marionette lines. This result is very subtle, I often refer to it as the “invisible” treatment as nobody will know you had this done but your skin will look and feel more supported.
Larger amounts can be used to visibly define the jaw line, lift the cheeks, and volumise the lips for a total face rejuvenation. I prefer to use a cannula (tiny blunt needle) that moves under the skin. This allows me to place filler in multiple locations using 1 injection point which means less bruising and no downtime. It also allows you to see the results as we go and give feedback.
These treatments are not for everyone. If you are interested in finding out if you are a suitable candidate, you can read more about fillers on my website.
